A clear hierarchy is crucial to a productive workplace. It provides the ship, the wind in the sails and the destination. But without a cohesive and motivated crew, the ship goes nowhere. Hierarchy in the Workplace Should Not Mean Simply Having a “Boss”
Understanding what a positive and productive hierarchy in the workplace looks like is very important. But it is equally important to point out what it is not. It is not simply a structure of authority figures who assign work, supervise and mete out discipline for infractions. This may get the work done, but it is not a recipe for real success.
Supervisors Must Be Both Passionate and Compassionate
The character of leaders defines the nature and success of work, and ultimately, the business. Seasoned individuals who know the industry, the business and the employees well are prime candidates for leadership positions. But they must also be trusted and respected by those they supervise – trusted to be fair and act without prejudice in their decisions, and respected enough that workers accept their choices and understand they must be acted upon. Pragmatism, fairness and resolve are three important traits for a good team leader.

• Making final decisions- One of the most critical aspects of a hierarchy is that it has clear decision makers. This is essential, especially in a vibrant work environment where multiple ideas and directions for a project are discussed. Work must move forward.
• Setting priorities – This includes deadlines, availability of equipment and skilled individuals, market demand, client needs, etc. There are many things to consider when deciding what gets done first. Discussions are necessary, but the team leader must assign priorities.
• Assigning and keeping everyone on task – While a casual atmosphere is usually best and there may occasionally be room for some minor diversions, it cannot be forgotten that there is a common goal everyone is striving to reach. A team leader knows the skills and traits of each team member, and what to ask of each of them in order to complete a project.
• Maintaining harmony and a positive environment – There are going to be disagreements and uncomfortable situations. An adept leader steps in and renders a fair solution, even if the resolution is one that is difficult for some to accept. As quickly as possible, the next task of the supervisor is to move on and get everyone back to the great job they were doing.
Employee Recognition: Everyone Should Know When Someone Has Done Something Exceptional
Employee recognition is very important in a group environment. Giving credit to the originator of a terrific new idea or solution to a difficult problem motivates others to strive for the same.
Conversely, imagine that someone overcomes a roadblock for the team and there is no credit given, or perhaps just a nod of thanks. At best, there is no real motivation for anyone else to go above and beyond. At worst, there is some resentment (especially if the team leader winds up getting sole credit for it). Toxic feelings do not make a better product for customers.
Verbal Recognition Is a Great Start
Even shy people like to be publicly acknowledged when they have done something impressive. Saying something like, “Jo here, came up with a great solution to our problem,” at the next meeting means a lot not only to Jo, but also to everyone else. They can all see that although it is a team effort, the individuals on the team also matter.
Consistent Effort Is Also Worth Recognition
Not every significant contribution is a “breakthrough” for the team. There are those who give their best effort every day over a long period of time. This is definitely worth open acknowledgment also.
With the right leadership in place, and an open and positive team atmosphere, every member of the crew will pull together, and not be afraid to reach out individually and do what is needed to get the job done. They will strive happily and confidently, knowing their captain has their back. This ship can now sail home.
