Spiceworks Community Digest: What are we even doing here?
Kicking off a new week is a great time for a little reflection. We often talk about how we got into IT, whether it was a lifelong passion, a happy accident, or simply following a strong career path. But what about what keeps us in this profession? That’s a discussion that recently popped up on the Spiceworks Community.
Shableigh started the conversation by their own motivation: a constant thirst for learning, a love for critical thinking and problem-solving, and the freedom IT provides to explore diverse interests from web development to sysadmin tasks.
The replies from the community really show just how diverse the reasons are that keep IT professionals going:
The Endless Learning and Variety: Many users echoed the sentiment of continuous learning. As J-Nonya put it, “For me, there’s no other field like IT.” Many users highlighted the sheer number of IT sub-fields, ensuring boredom is rarely an issue, and the satisfaction of applying common troubleshooting across general problems.
Problem-Solving and Puzzles: The intellectual challenge of IT is a huge draw. Ser Ginger loves learning and solving problems and puzzles and finds satisfaction in figuring out how to put together business-level solutions.
Financial Security and Family First: For some, the “why” is a bit more personal. C-T says that IT “provides the life for my family that my wife and I would like.” While not every day is perfect, the job allows them to take off and spend ample time with the family without having to stress over bills.
Community and Contentment: The power of community was also noted as one of the main points for staying in IT. J-Nonya mentioned, “if I get stuck, there’s a fantastic community to fall back on, too.” Others expressed a sense of contentment with where they are in their careers, having found a stable and engaging path.
This discussion is a great reminder that IT isn’t just about troubleshooting hardware or managing networks. Head over to the Spiceworks Community to read the full discussion and share your “why.”
