Spiceworks Community Digest: Enter the Hall of Legends
The world of tech is in a state of constant evolution, but some innovations are more than just a step forward, they build the foundation for everything that follows. Think of the dial-up modem that first connected us to the internet, the floppy disk that taught us about data storage, or the mouse and keyboard that changed how we interact with computers (and each other) forever.
With the official demise of AOL dial-up looming, our own Jeff Grettler asked the Spiceworks Community an excellent question about tech evolution: What legendary technology do you think must be included in a “Hall of Legends”?
The Foundational Game-Changers
For many in the community, their answers focused on the foundational technologies that have shaped the way we live and work today. Many suggestions focused on the dial-up modem and early home computers like the Commodore-64.
Modern Unsung Heroes
Other suggestions focused on the unsung heroes of daily IT life. Hard drives and the USB port were frequent mentions, underappreciated for bringing standardization and immense storage capacity. As Gorfmaster1 mentioned, “It was dark times when every manufacturer wanted to do it their own way,” highlighting how the USB port rescued us from a tangled mess of cables.
The Big Innovators
Some of the most thoughtful responses celebrated technologies that were not just incremental but represented a huge leap forward. For example, Andrew_F pointed out GUI (Graphical User Interface) as a top pick, as it “completely changed” how we interact with computers, moving us away from command-line screens.
